What defines a “safe” baby toy? In a nutshell you want to know that any toy you give your baby will not harm them.   Almost any toy given to a baby or toddler will ultimately end up in the mouth. What the toy is made of and, more importantly, how it is coloured poses one of the more serious risks for parents when selecting toys. In years gone by it was rare or almost unheard of that manufacturers had used toxic materials for making baby toys – then with the demand increasing for ever newer and cheaper toys the inevitable corner cutting takes place and a number of cases occurred which included toxic material being used in the manufacture of toys.

There are a number of standards that have been introduced to help parents make the right choice when selecting a toy for their babies. The European Union published a Safety Directive for Toys on 30th June 2009, (directive number 2009/48/EC). The aim of this directive was to bring newer and higher safety standards to cope with more recently identified health hazards. In addition it aimed to strengthen the responsibility of marketing toys for importers and manufacturers as well as increasing the surveillance obligations of the enforcement authorities in each Member State. This directive not only applies to manufacturers within the European Union States but also to those manufacturers outside the EU that wish to market their product to the countries of the EU.
